Several dimensions to the left of ours is another instance of Earth. At first glance, it looks similar to our world. But a closer look reveals a disturbing difference—the overwhelming presence of cigarettes and the businesses that produce them. Numerous billboards proclaiming “Richard’s” and “Poshy” tower high above every major city, the distinct smell of burning desertweed is everywhere, and even children’s charities aren’t above partnering with a smoky sponsor. As for the people inhabiting this tar-drenched dystopia…
Well, they are camels, after all.
The Smoking is Cool! project revolves around an indie pop-punk band living in West Herd City, the Epicenter of Excess. Taking inspiration from vintage tobacco ads as a cultural touchstone, the project explores ethics in advertising, mall goth culture, social media, sexuality, vice and trauma, and much, much more.
Smoking is Cool! is an ever-evolving project that relies on donations from other art fans to fund collaborations with independent artists to bring West Herd City and its inhabitants to life.
